The Avon Valley region is perfect for both a day trip or a longer jaunt where you can easily explore historic Beverley, Northam, Goomalling, Toodyay and York on a self-drive getaway.
Sit back, strap in and start the car – it’s time to hit the road for the ultimate Avon Valley road trip.

Perth to Toodyay
Approx. 75mins & 87km
Arrive in historic Toodyay after a scenic drive from Perth and stop by the Visitor Centre to explore this charming inland town. Discover local history at the Newcastle Gaol Museum, Connor’s Mill, and scenic walking trails.
In spring, wildflowers bloom across Pelham Reserve, Dawn Atwell Reserve, and Wongamine Nature Reserve, offering stunning trails. The popular Bilya Track begins in town and follows the Avon River, leading into peaceful bushland. Toodyay offers an abundance of parks, nature reserves, and bushland. Pack a picnic from the award-winning bakery or a local winery and relax in one of its many scenic spots.
With kids along, try the archery park or emu farm, and don’t miss the Miniature Railway, running every first and third Sunday (except fire season).
Stay overnight in cozy options from glamping tents and tiny cabins to historic B&Bs and the local caravan park.

Day 1


Toodyay to Northam via Goomalling
Approx. 35mins & 49km then approx 35mins & 46km
On your way from Toodyay to Northam, take a detour to Goomalling, where vibrant wildflowers bloom from July to September. Spend the morning at the Goomalling Schoolhouse Museum, then visit Gabby Quoi Quoi Lookout and the Oak Park wetlands.
Enjoy old-world charm at Mary’s Tearoom in Slater Homestead, a local gem for Devonshire Tea or homemade cake.
In Northam, explore the public art and architecture before visiting the Northam Visitor Centre and Bilya Koort Boodja Centre for Nyoongar Culture, where interactive exhibits highlight Aboriginal heritage. Spot white swans along the Avon River and soak up the views.
As an official Astrotourism Town, Northam offers prime stargazing and a range of stays, from renovated historic hotels to RV parks. For a memorable morning, take a hot-air balloon ride from April to November and see the Avon Valley from above at sunrise.

Northam to York

Start your visit at the York Visitor Centre and Town Hall to plan your day and admire the iconic staircase and dress circle. Stroll along the Terrace, taking in heritage buildings like Sargents Pharmacy, the York Courthouse, and classic bullnose verandas.
Explore local galleries or visit the York Motor Museum, then grab lunch from a nearby eatery to enjoy alfresco at Avon Park by the Avon River/Gogulyar Bilya, just two minutes from the main street. Cross the suspension bridge for views of Mount Bakewell/Walwaling, or walk the Avon Trail to spot local birdlife.

York to Perth via Beverley

On the cruisy drive back to Perth, stop by the vibrant heritage town of Beverley. Pop into the Beverley Visitor Centre to find your bearings, then learn about the town’s rich history at one of the museums and explore the town following the award-winning Vincent Street Heritage Walk. Inspired by the stunning murals you spot along the way, you might even like to drop into the Beverley Station Gallery and meet the current artist-in-residence.
If you haven’t pre-booked a glider experience to view the Avon Valley by air, head off on a walking trail instead to enjoy the Shire of Beverley’s varied landscapes and diverse vegetation. There are also a number of geocaching trails to explore.
